# The Ocean

There is a place that is not on the map.

The world map knows **twelve** regions. It does not know this one. There is no signpost pointing at it, no gate, and nothing in the game will ever tell you it is there. It is the deepest thing in gluniverse and the only way to find it is to go looking.

## Getting there

Two things stand between you and it, and neither can be talked around.

**You need level 16.** Deep water is a solid wall below that. Walk at it at level 15 and your soul simply refuses.

**You need to swim east.** [The Shore](/gluebook/gluniverse-four-edges) has a river that runs out to the waterline on its eastern edge, and the deep core of that river keeps going. Follow it out far enough and the Shore ends and something else begins.

Take the swim seriously. Point and click will not path you through deep water, so you swim it on **WASD**, by hand.

## It is all water

The Ocean is 80 tiles by 80 and **every single tile is deep water**. There is no shore inside it, no floor, no bench, no gather node, no vendor and no way home except the way you came. A few rock formations break the surface, and that is the only cover in the world out there.

You are also **slow**. Swimming moves you at **half** your walking speed, and swim-galloping only gets you to two thirds. Read the next section with that number in mind.

## What lives there

Three kinds of fish, and something else.

| | Health | Power | Speed | XP | Level |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Nipper** | 14 | 5 | 9 | 12 | 6 to 7 |
| **Snapper** | 22 | 7 | 9 | 18 | 8 to 9 |
| **Gulper** | 30 | 9 | 8 | 26 | 10 to 11 |
| **Reef Shark** | 70 | 13 | 9 | 55 | 11 |

Notice the speed column. **Everything in the Ocean is faster than you are**, and you are at half speed. There is no running away out here. If you pick a fight you finish it, and if it goes badly you have a long slow swim with something biting you the whole way.

There are exactly **three reef sharks** in the whole Ocean, spread far apart, each on a **six minute** respawn. At power 13 a shark hits as hard as a White Wolf, which is as hard as any ordinary animal in the world gets. Only [Lil Knacker](/gluebook/gluniverse-knackers-pass) and his nags hit harder, and they are a boss.

## Fishbone

The fish drop **fishbone**, and nothing else in the world does. There is no fishbone node anywhere and there never will be: the Ocean holds **4,000 of it, total, forever**.

Fishbone is worth 5 gloo at the vendor floor, but that is not what it is for. At the kiln, from level 6:

**2 fishbone makes 1 bone.**

That is the point of the whole zone. [Bone](/gluebook/gluniverse-gathering) is the dearest raw material in gluniverse, the thing every good weapon and most of the charms and the best armor want, and it is the one thing the ground no longer gives you at all. The sea is one of the two doors left, and it is guarded by sharks.

The kiln reads the same **world ceiling of 9,000** that a kill does. When the world is holding all the bone it can, the kiln waits with everything else: refining is a door into the same room, not a way around it. Even fished dry, every fishbone refined, the total bone that can exist at once stays under that ceiling. The sea is not a faucet. It is one more finite room.

## The Ocean Treasury

**Every reef shark drops one, guaranteed.** It is a sealed thing you carry home and open, and it pays in gloo.

You may open **four treasuries a day**, and the day turns at midnight UTC. The cap is shared with the **Frozen Treasury** off [Lil Knacker](/gluebook/gluniverse-knackers-pass), an exact copy of this one: four of any mix is the day. Holding them and trading them is uncapped, so treasuries pile up and sell on the Exchange like anything else. Only opening is rationed.

| Chance | Pays |
|---|---|
| 75% | 100 to 300 gloo |
| 20% | 300 to 1,000 |
| 4.5% | 1,000 to 5,000 |
| 0.49% | 5,000 to 50,000 |
| **0.01%** | **500,000 flat** |

An open is worth about **600 gloo** on average, so a full four a day is worth around 2,400. That is a modest, honest trickle, with a one in ten thousand tail that pays half a million and tells the entire world it happened.

## What it costs to die out there

Everything, and further away than usual.

Dying in the Ocean works like dying anywhere: you drop your whole bag and your worn gear where you fell, and you wake up in the Dead Forest. The difference is where "where you fell" is. Your bag will be sitting on the open sea, in a zone with no map, that you have to cross the world and swim back out to reach, inside the **3 minutes** it stays locked to you.

Realistically, what you drop in the Ocean is gone.

So carry nothing you are not willing to feed the fish. Bank your fishbone in a [stash](/gluebook/gluniverse-carrying) between trips. The souls who get rich out here are the ones who make short runs, not long ones.

## Why bother

Because it is one of only two ways new bone reaches the world at all, the other being a kill, in a world where bone runs the gear economy. Because the sharks pay a treasury every time. Because a shark's **55 XP** is the richest base payout of any ordinary animal in the game, and there is nothing down there to share it with. And because almost nobody has been.
